As per the allocation of Business Rules of the Government of India, Controller of Publications is the nodal official publisher for all the Government books. All Government publications are stocked, stored and sold from different counters of the Department of Publication. The main office is located at Civil Lines, Delhi and it has branches at Kitab Mahal, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, New Delhi; High Court, New Delhi; Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi; Book Depot, Kolkata; and Sales Counter at New CGO Complex, Mumbai.
Printed Books received from the Government of India Press, are sent to the Store Keeper - I. Store Keeper - I in turn submits a sample copy of the publication to the Publishing Branch of Department of Publication. The Publishing Section then prepares the vouchers for issue of books in consignment to be sent to different sales counters as well as for free distribution under pre-approval SDL. The books are supplied to the P&D Section for dispatch as per the vouchers. The remaining books are sent to the Sales-counters and Retail Stores-II, III & IV including the Wholesale Store for stocking the balance stock of books. The books are then supplied to the customers and agents as per their requirements.
The Periodical Section also had its own set procedures and the periodicals are sent to the agents as well as subscribers regularly.
The Gazettes of the Government of India and Delhi Government are also sold by this Department. Immediately after printing the Gazette documents, the concerned Printing Press dispatches copies of the Gazettes to the Sales-counter Kitab Mahal in the first instance. The receipt of the Gazette documents by Kitab Mahal is treated as the date of release of the Gazette. The balances copies of the Gazette are then collected from the Printing Presses and are sent out to the various subscribers.
The cost of the Gazette is normally Rs. 35/- (Thirty Five) only.
